Wild Hunt Micro
A downloadable game
The world of Residue is a shadow of its former self. A land without death where the only fatal injury is the ones of the mind. Mental anguish leads one to become a Wraith, a bestial monster that roams the lands of Residue forever. A great war ended the age of kingdoms as its horrors birthed the Wild Hunt. A legion of Wraiths that dot the land. People retreated to the grounds of the Four Great Academies. The Academies trained Hunters since ages long past, warriors who unlocked the unique spell of their soul known as an Awakening. Armed with transforming weapons called Armis, Hunters go out to hunt threats to the Academies and its governing bodies called the Faculties.
For the last three years, I've been working on a new title to go live after my current, major release, Petmon, comes out.
During development, I listened to the Dice Exploders podcast. In the first episode, they discussed "Lasers & Feelings" by John Harper. They posed a challenge to developers: to consider making a hack of this game as an experiment in minimalism.
I took them up on the offer using Wild Hunt. The experience was enlightening. I had gotten my start with Vincent Baker's Powered By The Apocalypse and my prior title, We Dig Giant Robots, was also a small game. It's not that I never had worked in this space before. However, I had never taken a larger project and attempted to condense it down into a Micro RPG before. That helped me identify some areas of my 200+ page game that may need to be cut due to "feature creep."
The experiment produced Wild Hunt Micro. Since Wild Hunt Micro is fully functional, I decided to do some quick layout for it, use some of the art that I had already commissioned for the main release, and give it out for free as a promotional product of the upcoming game.
Licensing: Only the text of this game is licensed under CC BY 4.0. While I commissioned the art and have the right to use it in personal and commercial work, I do not have the copyright of the art. Thus, I do not have the authority to put it under CC BY 4.0 nor do I intend to do so.
Disclaimer: Wild Hunt proper is going to be a game using Dicey Fate, my hack of Fate Core that incorporates elements of other systems, such as PBTA. This release is not indicative of what Wild Hunt will become. But, it is an example of the setting and premise, hinting at elements that I am expanding on in the game as we continue playtests.
Consider it a demo of the setting to get you interested in the larger release. Or, perhaps if you have no interested in Fate Core, a means to play the setting in a simple, quick manner.
